This small booklet (made from a poster) features reproductions of 12 artist trading cards (ATCs) that were made and exchanged during the first year of monthly trading sessions at The Grind & Gallery Coffee Bar (Vancouver). It marks the first anniversary of the group and its temporary exhibition on the walls of the coffee shop.
ATCs were initiated by Austrian artist m. vanci stirnemann in 1997. Canadian artist Chuck Stake (aka Don Mabie) imported the idea to Canada, with trading sessions that continue for years.
Vancouver artists Lois Klassen, Ginger Mason and Bill Thomson started a Pacific series of ATC trading sessions at the Grind & Gallery Coffee Bar in November 2000. One year later this group presents their first exhibition and this document.
Social exchanges during a trading session are a crucial part of ATC activity…”
