Mail art from Elaine Rounds is an aesthetic delight. Elaine and I have been exchanging small books, letters, artist trading cards, and other paper arts for decades. I have a round golden box filled with beautifully crafted tiny artworks that Rounds has mailed to be over the years. It is a treasure! Her most recent offering includes a small book made from decorative rice paper samples and a gallery notice card for an exhibition by Craig Milliken at Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba in Rounds’s home place of Brandon, Manitoba. The book themed collages on the envelope and interior cards and pamphlet are like a designer’s mood board for this moment. The grey, black, and blue fragments of colour and texture that she used from pictures of worn books and letters and paintings are a residue of a more material way of life, that seem to call for our reflection and reinvention.
